Review appointments 1 Year, 2 Months ago Kudos: 0
Hi,

I am new to this forum and I am interested to hear how people feel when they have review appointments. Do they feel relieved to be doing review appointments? Do they feel anxious or nervous at these times? What do they do to relieve and manage anxiety during these times?

Thanks.

Hi Beck

Welcome to Revive! This forum is a great way to find out all the things that specialists can't tell you - such as how it actually feels to go through it all. So your question is a really important one.

I'm coming up to five years in remission and still have to go back for check-ups every six months. Even though I know that I feel healthy, there is still some part of me that has doubt. I guess this is because we have had such shocking news before so we know how quickly things can change. We know that your whole life can change in one hour. No many people have had that realisation.

So for me, the expereince of check-ups brings on mixed emotions. On the one hand, I'm really glad that everything is getting checked out so if something did go wrong they'd be onto it in a flash. It is the smart thing to do to be vigilant about one's health, whether you've had cancer or not!!

On the other hand, I'm a little nervous that it will all go horribly wrong. BUT, the feeling of relief and happiness when there's nothing to report is immense. It feels like, "yep, that's taken care of for another 6 months" I have permission not to worry about it after that.

I think the best thing you can do to manage the anxiety is know you are doing the right thing by staying in control of your health and being vigliant. And the more check-ups you have over time, and the more times the result is positive (fingers crossed), the less you will worry every time you go. But there will always be butterflies, and this is perfectly normal.

I hope this helps. I completely understand how you must be feeling having felt that so many times myself. It's especially hard over christmas or if you've got something exciting coming up - cos you don't want a bad result to screw things up!!

Please keep in touch and let me know how you go. Above all, do the best for your body and you'll feel like you're taking control of your health!

Danielle

Hi Danielle,

Thank you for sharing your experiences of review appointments.
I have mixed feelings about check ups too.

I understand the importance of monitoring my health. I am being treated and monitored for late effects by several specialists. I find it upsetting and frightening when doctors find things. Particularly when I feel well and have been telling myself that I am ok. I think this is causing me to feel more anxious when I attend appointments because I really don't know what to expect.

I think I am trying to find a balance. A balance between monitoring my health to make sure that I am ok. But at the same time, being able to get on with living my life and having time where I feel free of cancer and hospital appointments.

Thanks for listening.

Hi Beck

It sounds like you have the philosophy pretty much worked out - it really is about balance! Although it can be hard, NOT thinking about cancer is really important so we can concentrate on all the good things in life (and there are lots!!)

Good luck with everything - let me know how it all goes
